Tibetan Horse Festival

Tibetan Horse Festival

Tibetan Horse Festival

Summer is one of the most amazing times to visit Tibet. People who live in Tibet love summer because of the Horse Festival. There are a few that are well worth the trip up there.
The Litang horse Festival is one of the most well known in Tibet. The horse festival is held in August and takes place Ganzi, Litang. Litang is called High Town because of its altitude of 4133 meters. The festival takes place in the grassland called Maoya, which means 'flat place as a bronze mirror. The festival is held when the grassland is the greenest and the flowers are in full bloom. Families set up their round white tents and stay for the 10 day festival.
The racing horse are highlight of the festival. They are often dressed in bright colors, embroidered belts,  decorated saddles and lots of bronze bells. The races include trekking, riding skills, long distance but the most anticipated is the horse jumping. The horse jumping is when the rider almost jumps off the horse and hangs under the belly of the horse upside down or standing on the back of the horse while the horse is running. T
This is a photo from the Litang horse Festival, the horse jumping competition. The man on the horse has not fallen from his horse. He is competing in the horse jumping competition. The riders hang off the side of the horse, until their hands touch the ground. Some of the riders can hang under the belly of the horse and other can stand on the back of the horse while the horse is still running.

Litang Horse Festival

Another Tibetan horse festival that is the Gyantse Horse Racing Festival.  The festival is held in either June or July and this festival began in 1408. During this festival horses and riders try many of their different skills. These include racing, archery and shooting.

Bone Hair Combs

Bone Hair Combs

Bone Hair Combs

Every city you go to and in every Chinese gift shop you visit you will always see a large box of combs made out of bone. I never really understood the idea of using bone to brush your hair, but again, I started asking a lot of questions.
A long, long time ago, think ancient China, the best combs were made from bone, mostly fish bone. Some of the nice combs were made from antelope horn, elephant tusk or goat horn. These bones and tusks were carved and polished until they were perfect combs. And, because they are made of bone or tusk they were anti static and also heat resistant.
Once the bone was selected the bone was carved into a comb shape and each tooth was then carved, filed and polished, all by hand. This is an 18 step process that makes a perfect comb that will not snag, rip or split the hair.
Most of the combs now in China are made from Ox or Yak. They have an amazing color and some of the sales girls in the shops will also tell you that using these combs will make your hair gown faster, thicker and shiner.

Beads, String, Jewelry Supplies and Tons More!

Beads, String, Jewelry Supplies and Tons More!

Well, I just spent the last two days reactivating all of our products. My husband and I were living in Guangzhou for the past few years. But, because of his work we were relocated to Shanghai. Just last week we shipped the last of our boxes of 'stuff' here. And that included all of my jewelry and supplies. And let me tell you there were 30 boxes, some weighing up to 20kg and we carried down from our apartment on the 6th floor, with no elevator! So, I'm very happy it is all finally here and arrived safely.

I'm most excited about the beads. We have pearl shell, coral, turquoise, tiger eye, amethyst, jade, agate in every color imaginable. Take a look for your self - http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/shangrilacraft/1/1/51952//
If you looking for a stone, color or size you don't see up there just email me and I will get it for you.

We also have cinnabar beads. My favorite is the red Laughing Buddha. He is just so cute! http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/shangrilacraft/1/1/54187//

Summer is OVER!!! :(

Summer is OVER!!!

Summer is OVER!!!

I can't believe that summer is over! I just heard via facebook (where I hear most of my news) that today was the first day back to school! I can't Believe that! wow, is all I can say. And, of course -it flew by.

Spending the summer in Shanghai this year was actually quite fun. It's still a new city to my husband and I, so we did our fare share of exploring and site seeing. Besides some amazing jewelry supply markets (of course I loved them!) My favorite find was a beach. Yep, thats right, smack dab in the center of the city, by the pearl tower and right on the river is a man made beach. Its crazy cheep, easy to get to and during the week amazingly quite. I'm guessing that everyone else was at work and if not they were sitting on some little island way south of here.

Thses are some photos of the beach in the center of Shanhai, pretty little sun beads, a pool and everything! The dragon looking boat is a giant boat that does the evening river cruises and dinner too.

We have two dogs and a cat that we bought a few years ago in Guangzhou. So, when we moved to Shanghai in the spring we moved them here of course. But, I guess that isnt the most common thing to do in China. It was a little difficult and now everyone at my husbands work thinks we are completly crazy. I guess they aren't animal lovers! But, the dogs have both had an amazing summer too. Decan didn't even need to get her usually summer hair cut. In Guangzhou the summers are so hot and insanely humid, that we had to cut our dogs hair quite short, she looked like a little pig. This summer she was very happy that the scissors and shaver stayed far away from her. She is the black one in the photo and quite fluffy.

Now that summer fun time is over, its time to get down  to work again! My entire day today was spend sorting jewelry suppies and getting ready for a new season to start. While I was sorting I couldn't believe how much of the howlite turquoise I actually had. So, all the prices have been reduced and best part of all- Free Shipping on all of the howlite turquoise beads! If your curious just how cheap the beads are and what fun colors we have, you can take a look here-

I have also added a new shop section call Thailand Jewlry. And that is what it is! On our last trip to Thailand I strock up at some of the jewelry markets and over the summer I finally had some time to make some amazing necklaces and earrings together. All inspired by Thailand of course!  Have a look at some of my Thailand pieces here -

Another new section that I have added to my shop is Home Collection. http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/shangrilacraft/1/1/237831// I'm still working on this one, so it is a bit on the small side right now. But, I do have some Thailand inspired bookmarks for those of us who love a good book. I also have some really cool Chinese bells that I strung together with mala string and small jade beads. They would be great for meditations or because of the picture on the bell, the make a great conversation piece. They have the dragon and the pheonix, from the famous Chinese legend. I wrote the story in the write up section. It's a long story, but really interesting and I have yet to meet a Chinese person who doesn't believe the whole story. So have a read for yourself-

Those are my updates for my shop right now and I do promise to try and keep eveyone updated a lot more!

Red Rivers in Chongqing China?

Red Rivers in Chongqing China?

Red Rivers in Chongqing China?

This is a photo I saw on yahoo.com news yesterday. The article was about how the Yangtze River had turned red over the last few days, for an unknown reason.
7629

My husband and I lived in Chongqing for a few months last fall. I actually you can see our apartment in this photo, across the river just to the right of the talltest building. We had the most amazing view from that apartment. We were on the 30th floor and at night all you could see were the beautiful city light, lights around the river and the many, many night curise boats.

We were living there during the fall, but people told us a lot of stories about this river during the spring. They told us becuase of the high amounts of rain the river actually floods and floods a lot. So much that the roads and highways at times are unuseable because there is so much water and the roads basically become a river too!

Chongqing was an amazing city to live in. It is surrounded by mountains, it gets some unreal thunder storms and we had a perfect view for that. The they city gets so hot and humid during the summer, about 40 plus 75%+ humidity on a normal day. The city known as one of the 'furnace' cities in China because of its extream heat.

I asked the translator at my husbands work where the jewelry markets were. She told me there was one and it was amazing. I was so excited. It was about a 20 minute walk from our place. It was the only market around, everything else was boutique shops and store and that is very strange for a city in China.

But, when I got to the market, I was so disapointed. It wasn't a 'jewely' maket at all. It was an everything market- christmas trees, Chinese new year decorations, slippers, winter hats, cheap polyester sweaters, cups and dishes, bedding and a few so called jewelry stores. Nearly all the the jewerly stores were the same, fake silver necklaces with giant pendants covered in sparkely rinestones. Not what I was looking for at all. I did manage to find one shop that was selling mala necklaces and bracelets and there were willing to sell me some beads. The only problem was they wanted about 10 times the price for each strand. I tried to barted them down to a normal price, but they didn't budge!

Seeing this photo yesterday brought back so many memories of last fall. Chongqing is an amazing city, just not too helpful for me getting jewelry supplies!

I have added Another NEW section- Home Collection! The section is new but we have two products that we think you will love!

The first product is our Thai inspired bookmark. It is made of a thin, light wood and comes in five colors; brown, red, green, blue and black. The best part of these is the amazing elephant square at the top of the bookmark. This is the perfect thing for travellers and book lovers! (I have one in my book!!!)

Our other new product in our Home Collection our the bells. These are Chinese bells that can be used for meditaion or a center piece in your home. The bells are quite special in China because of the design around both of the bells. One has a picture of a dragon and the other has a phoenix. This is a scene from a very famous legend in China.
7805

Here is the legend.....A long time ago.....

......there was a white jade dragon who lived in a rock cave near the Celestial River. Just across from the river in the Great forest, lived a Golden Phoenix.
Each day the dragon and phoenix met, one in the sky the other in the river. One day they both met at an island in the river. They found a shiny pebble and were fascinated by it.
They decided to carve the pebble in to the most beautiful pearl. The Phoenix flew to the mountain to collect dew drops and the Dragon collected water from the river to put on the pebble, to make it shine. It took the two of them years and years, but finally they had made the most beautiful pearl anyone had ever seen.
Both the Dragon and the Phoenix loved the pearl so much, neither wanted to go home and leave the pearl. They both decided to live on the island next to the pearl.
The pearl was magic. Wherever it shone, things were better. Trees were greener, flowers bloomed more and longer, the harvest were bigger and healthier. The whole land became better because of the pearl.
One day the Queen Mother of Heaven saw the light coming from the pearl. She wanted it for herself immediately. She sent one of her guards down from the heavens to steal the pearl. In the middle of the night, while the Dragon and Phoenix were both asleep, the guard took the pearl and gave it to the Queen Mother of the Heavens. She was so pleased to have the pearl. She locked it up in a secret room in her palace.
The next morning when the Dragon and Phoenix woke up, they saw the pearl was gone. They looked everywhere, for months and months but could not find the pearl.
On the Queen Mothers birthday, she prepared a grand feast and invited all of immortals, gods and goddesses to her palace. With all the excitement of her guest and party, the Queen Mother of the Heavens declared she had the most spectacular prize in both the heavens and earth. Immediately the guest wanted to see. She opened the secret room and took out the pearl. The guests loved the pearl.
But, back on earth the Dragon and Phoenix were still searching for the pearl. When Dragon suddenly saw the pearls bright light coming down from the clouds. Both Dragon and Phoenix flew as fast as they could towards the cloudy heavens.

When they arrived, they pushed through all the the Queen Mothers Quests and told her that was their pearl! The Queen Mother was furious! She told them, she was the Queen and all the treasures belonged to her!
Dragon and Phoenix told the Queen Mother of the Heavens, that the heavens did not create this pearl, it was not created on earth. But, they had made the pearl and it took years and years of hard work.
In anger, the Queen Mother told the guards to get the Dragon and Phoenix out of her palace. But, Dragon and Phoenix fought back. The three fought over the pearl, all struggling to grab a hold of it. But, the pearl fell and dropped through the clouds into the air.
The Dragon and Phoenix ran to catch the pearl. But, the pearl fell too fast and they saw it land on earth. When it touched the earth the pearl turned into a beautiful blue lake. The Dragon and Phoenix already loved the lake and did not want to be away from it. They changed themselves into mountains and went beside the lake, where they will stay forever.
This legend is about the West Lake in Hangzhou. The two mountains beside the lake are called Jade Dragon Mountain and Golden Phoenix Mountain.

Now, in China there is a famous saying about this area. "Above there is paradise, below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou."

Shang ri-la Temple

Shang ri-la Temple

Shang ri-la Temple

If you have been reading any of my past posts you'll know how much I love Shang-ri la. This amazing city also called Zhongdian is just on the Chinese and Tibetan boarder. It's thousands of meters up on an amazing mountain, always has clear blue sky and warm friendly people.
Each time I visit Shang-ri la I always go to the temple. The temple is a smaller version of the Potala Palace in Lhasa. It is called Song Zan Lin Si. The temple is still really quite large and has some of the most amazing statues and paintings I have ever seen.
This is a photo I took outside of the Song Zan Lin Temple. The sky was actually grey that day, because it was snowing off and on that whole week. It was so great to see snow again. Around the whole temple there are lots of animals. This cute little pig was in front of the temple by the lake having eating some grass. In side the temple there were chickens, cows, goats, cats and even some yaks.

This is a photo of me on the temple stairs. Most of the temples in Asia are on mountains or at least have a long and high stairway to climb. I was told that the reason for this is to keep everyone in shape and it is great exercise for everyone since they visit the temple daily. In Shang ri-la the temple there also has a lot of stairs, but along the way up there are small doors where you can follow a hallway or path to a smaller part of the temple, statue room, prayer wheel or prayer room.
Song Zan Lin Si in shangri la
This is me half way up the long stair way in the Shang-ri la temple.

Tibetan Snow Lion

Tibetan Snow Lion

The snow lion is the national symbol of Tibet. There are two snow lions of their flag and snow flags can be seen in a lot of Tibetan art work and the most auspicious snow lions are those with a blue mane.

According to Tibetan legends the snow lion comes from China and represents spiritual power. Also, the prayer flags that can be seen all over Tibet and Nepal have an image of a snow lion and it is the symbol of fearlessness, joy and unconditional cheerfulness.

Tibetan Phoenix

Tibetan Phoenix

In Tibetan legends and culture the phoenix is brought up a lot. The phoenix is thought to symbolize eternal life, peace and prosperity.
The phoenix is known through legends to be able to die in its own flames and then resurrect in it's ashes. The Tibetan phoenix is a mix of many animals, the front of a swan, the back of a unicorn, the throat of a swallow, the bill of a fowl, the neck of a snake, the tail of a fish, the forehead of a crane and stripes of a dragon.

The Blue Buddha- The Nature of Things with David Suzuki

The Blue Buddha- The Nature of Things with David Suzuki

The Blue Buddha- The Nature of Things

I watched a very interesting show this afternoon. 'The Nature of Things with David Suzuki' this episode was  titled 'The Blue Buddha'. The entire episode was about Tibetan medicine and it was fascinating.
If you have seen the Blue Buddha before in paintings or mudras, he is the healing Buddha. Tibetan monks have been studying medicine for centuries and instead of writing their finding in medical books, the monks used paintings. There are over 70 large paintings that show Tibetan medicine in large beautiful pictures, in a blend of Tibetan art and science.
Medical Tibetan monks have 3 steps to looking after a patient. First to observe the person, carefully checking the tongue and urine. The medical monk actually take a sample of the urine and stirs it carefully checking the color, density and mostly about the bubbles, how many there are and how long they last for.
The second step is touch. The medical monk carefully takes the patients pulse on their arm, in silence and watching the eye and face for any signals. The medical monks believe that the pointer, middle and ring finger are their best tools for healing. If they make hot tea or a hot drink, they must wear gloves to protect their fingers. To make their fingers more sensitive they will soak the three fingers in warm milk.
The third step is questioning and conversing with the patient. The medical monk will ask them not just what hurts and where, but about their mood the last few day, what they have been eating and how they have been feeling.
Many people in Tibet believe that the book of medicine came from The Buddha himself and he dropped the book in the valley for the monks to find. Others believe that the first king of Tibet is responsible for the amount of information in the book of medicine. This is because he held the first medical conference held in the 8th century. He invited doctors from all around the world to share their knowledge and teach others about their medical findings.
In Tibet each year a few of the smartest monks are allowed to go to the medical university in Lhasa. After they graduated they would then travel Tibet, Mongolia and parts of Asia to teach others about the mixture of Tibetan and Western medicine. The medical monk course is 7 years.  This course is still being taught today in Tibet, but now others who are not monks can join the program, but must be Buddhist.
Buddhist monks are not against Western medicine. They believe Western medicine is good for emergencies and trauma. But, Tibetan medicine is better for long term health and diseases. Their thinking is that almost all health problems come from poor eating habits and from bad choices and habits. In the episode a woman brought her baby into see the medical monk because he had a bad skin rash. For months the baby had been having skin problems. The skin was scabbing over and peeling off, all over the body. The mother had been trying many types of ointments and creams, some made the condition worse and others did nothing at all. The monk told her the baby was having these rashes because of his food. Monks strongly believe in a link between allergies and chemical and preservatives found in foods.
The medical monks watch the patience eyes and face while they are examining them. They believe that your health and mind are connected and the doctors must be friends and someone who you can open your soul up to.
The monks use natural medicines such as plants. Autumn is the best time for harvest and the roots are the most sought after part of the plant because it is concentrated and the fruit and leaves just fall off. When the monks are making or crushing the herbs, roots and plants to make medicine they recite the medicine Buddhist manta. Often crushing up the medicine can take more than 6 hours. Afterwards, to bless the medicine they recite mantras and hold a ceremony that last for 5 days. All of the monks, even those from the medical university participate in this ceremony.
Another patient who came to visit the medical monk was an old frail woman. She had been diagnosed with stomach cancer over a year ago at a local hospital. Just from looking into her eyes the monk knew right away that her disease was terminal. He asked how she was feeling and what she has been eating. He tells her to keep saying her prayers and to keep her mind calm and prepare for her death. He tells her to seek refuge in Buddha and the idea of rebirth. Tibetan's do not make any frantic attempts to prolong their lives. They believe that death is not a failure as you will be reborn again and we should spend each life trying to become as much like Buddha as we can.
In most part of Tibet after someone dies they have a sky funeral. This is where the body is taken out to the mountains away from the village and a ceremony is preformed. The body is cut into small precise pieces and fed to the vultures. The Tibetan's believe in the circle of life and feel this is way their body is going back into the earth and into the sky.
In some parts of Tibet and most parts of Mongolia people who have passed have a burial funeral. The coffin is taken out of the village and is turned around several times so that the soul cannot find it's way back to the village. The family visits the grave for 49 days, in which the soul will be reborn. The monk is the last to leave the grave. He will close the path so that the soul cannot follow them back to the village.
Tibetan medicine, much like Chinese medicine is very different from Western medicine. But, they believe that one day in the future there will be a perfect blend of Tibetan and Western medicines to keep everyone happy and healthy.
5962 The Blue Buddha also called The Medicine Buddha.

fresh food equals a healthy person

fresh food equals a healthy person

I just wrote a blog earlier today about The Blue Buddha and Tibetan medicine. (which you can see here- http://www.shangrilacraft.com/index.php/11-tibet-and-buddhism/65-the-blue-buddha-tibetan-medicine) The Blue Buddha is known as the medicine or healing Buddha. One of main points that Tibetan medical healers or doctors believe is that almost all health problems come from poor eating habits and from bad choices and habits. This really got me thinking about how people here in China eat, how people at home eat and my eating habits.
Most people here in China do most of their grocery shopping daily or every two days. They go to wet markets and buy the freshest fruits and vegetables, eggs that were collected that same day and meat the was cut that day. And of course everything is eaten with steamed rice.
My husband and I don't eat a lot of meat, but when we do it is fresh from the butchers and cut that same day. We do eat a lot of beans. We buy them dry at the market and soak them over night, then cook them in the mornings. No chemicals or preservatives added and they taste so fresh.
Our vegetables are never more than a few days old and except for soy and vinegar, we don't use any sauces. Dairy is not used to much in Asia, so we really stay away from milk, creams and cheeses. And of couse anything prepackaged, canned or boxed we stay away from. At first this was mostly because they don't carry western food or brands at most stores, just specialty shops, but you really pay a lot for those. Now even if we do see them, we just don't want them anymore.
Occasionally, we do get cravings for something back home, my husband always wants nachos and chicken wings. We can get chicken wings here, but never spicy enough. But, one thing that is really rare to come across is a good taco, burrito, enchilada or anything else Mexican.
So, I decided to make my own. I started looking up recipes online for tortillas from scratch and homemade salsa and I was completely shocked! Nearly every recipe I found was just opening cans and bags of premade stuff and dumping them together. I just don't think that counts as homemade. Nothing in these recipes was fresh at all.
Now when I made tacos, I make the dough, roll the tortillas and cook them myself. Only a couple of ingredients and you know its fresh and no preservatives. I also do the same with the salsa, only fresh veggies and some lemon juice. Tacos have never tasted better. Have you ever looked on the ingredient list for salsa? It's huge and a lot of those things are just going to make you feel pretty lousy.
About a year ago I started trying out the green detox smoothies. We have them for breakfast, just a lot of vegetables, our favorite fruits and a bit of water. They might be a crazy color, but they taste great and make you feel amazing!
A couple of years ago, when we went back to Canada for a visit, we went to a few different grocery store just to look around. I was really surprised at the amount of premade, prepackaged and microwaveable foods. The fresh produce section seemed so small and to be honest, not so fresh.
Many people say this is because of Canada's climate and cold snowy winter. But, we have spent some time in Japan and Korea, both during the winter and I think food is fresher and diets are healthier in both countries compared to North America. Korea and Japan had similar ways of eating and of course their diet changes according to the weather and seasons. In the winter people in both countries eat a lot of soups and most vegetables are hearty or root vegetables, like cabbage, carrots, yams, potatoes and of course they are both giant fish fans.
The Tibetans believe that almost all health problems come from poor eating habits and from bad choices and habits. Just from looking at a 'normal' meal at home and now what I eat, I see and feel a really big difference.
As they say in China, 慢慢吃,  Màn man chī.
When you are served your meal, Chinese people say 慢慢吃,  Màn man chī. That translates to eat slowly.
慢慢吃,  Màn man chī!
