Songkran Festival is Thailands New Years or sometimes known as Thailand Water Festival because that is what people do! People sprinkle water on the elders as a sign of respect.
The holiday has always been closely associated with water. Originally people gently poured water onto elders and families heads to bring good fortune. But, the festival has now evolved into a fun spirited water fight, especially with Thai children. Even splashing strangers with a bucket of water or a water gun brings good luck. So, If you are visiting Thailand be prepared, you're going to get very wet!
Along with the water fights, visiting temples is what all Thai families do to show their respect to Buddha and give food to the monks. In the temples, or wat in Thai, you may also see some water. People often bring water into the temples to clean the Buddha statues.
